Bremer Bay – Top Things To Do and See

Imagine a town that sits at the mouth of an ancient river with an unparalleled view of the ocean on Australia’s Great Southern coastline!

Watch as the great whales come to shore in winter, and then swim with orca during summer. You will also marvel at a lush landscape full of diversity that is home to many unique plants & animals!

Get your four-wheel drive ready because there’s plenty more than just seeing these marine creatures. With its pristine beaches and wildlife, it’s easy to see why this little town is a nature lover’s dream. From the ocean views as you drive through on your way out of Bremer Bay or while waiting for that perfect sunset on dunes with family & friends; there are always new adventures around every corner!

Top things to do and see

Swimming and snorkelling. Blue skies, blue waters, and white sandy beaches… what else could you want for a perfect summer’s day? Grab your swimmers and snorkel gear and get yourself down to the beach! Reef beach is my favourite. Why? It is where dunes meet the ocean coupled with a protected lagoon where you can safely swim, snorkel, and paddle. It is absolutely a spectacular sight! If you opt to stay in the town centre, the number one thing to do is a swim/snorkel/paddle at the mouth of the famous Fitzgerald River, where the river meets the ocean! The water is clear and warm, perfect for a summer dip!

Four-wheel Driving.  Bremer Bay offers some of the best 4WD tracks in Western Australia. The rugged coastline & untouched beaches are just begging for your next adventure drive! Driving on the beach is exhilarating and fun for the whole family! If you are a novice with four-wheel driving, there are easy tracks that will take you to popular spots that offer fantastic views. Alternatively, go in convoy with your friends who have experience in 4WD so you can get help in case you get bogged.

Fishing. The Indian Ocean is home to many species of fish, from salmon to kingfish. Get ready with your fishing rods, baits, and a bucket for your catch!  The town Marina has a long stretch of the jetty that lets you fish in peace while enjoying the spectacular view. You can find other fishing spots with your 4WD to get more privacy and opportunities to hook big fish!

Sand Dunes.  Why not visit some of the most beautiful white dunes you’ve ever seen?! Bremer Bay beaches are in abundance of dunes. Reef Beach dunes are spectacular! You can even drive halfway up and hike to the top to make it more fun and exciting! You can get great views from the top of the dunes where you can see miles of perfectly shaped sandhills. Spend a few hours sledging down the sandhills and conclude the day watching the sunset on top of the magnificent dunes! Get ready with your cam to capture the magical moment of sunset as the moon gradually appears as the night falls.

Camping off-grid.  There are so many opportunities for camping in and around Bremer Bay. If you are looking for freedom camping sites, you can pitch a tent along its beaches or drive your car and take your camper trailer into a spot that means you have no other choice but to relax and take it all in! Best off-grid camping lies on the beaches and the Fitzgerald River National Park. If you’re not a camper, book yourself into one of the cabins and make yourself at home. There are other alternatives, such as booking a Red Track Ecotour for an environmentally responsible off-road experience that will allow you to enjoy the ideal off-road and off-grid adventure even if you don’t have the skills.

Hiking. Venture out for bushwalks around Bremer Bay’s spectacular national parks and nature reserves. The coastal heathlands are perfect for the avid bushwalker. I recommend you visit Fitzgerald River National Park where there are several walks you can do. The West Mount Barren is a 1.7km return and classified as Class 4 Trail, which is a moderately difficult walk to the peak. It is wonderfully scenic and offers magnificent views of the mountains, Doubtful Island, as well as amazing flora and fauna.

Quaalup Homestead. Think of stepping into an entirely new world, one that is both wild and relaxing. 40 acres of Quaalup Wilderness Retreat nestled in the western part of the Fitzgerald River National Park offer you this serene haven for your next adventure! Explore its many hidden gem trails where botanical wonders await around every turn and experience the wildlife. There’s something here for everyone to enjoy: whether they want some peace & quiet time, learn more about Quaalup’s history, or even just children looking forward dreamily to fun days playing with the animals.

Wildflowers. The Fitzgerald River National Park is a botanical treasure trove that houses some 2,500 plant species and 135 endemic plants. This area has been recognized by UNESCO for its amazing biodiversity and is one of the most important Flora areas on earth!

Whale Watching. Humpback Whales migrate along the Bremer and Geographe Bay coasts between May and November each year. Be sure to keep an eye out and, if you’re lucky, you may see these magnificent mammals and their calves! Head out to Point Ann where there’s a great lookout point, or even book a spot on a Wildlife Cruise. Orca tours run throughout the year, so you can also see these amazing creatures all year round. You’ll be able to get up close and personal with them on a tour! Although orca tours are great fun, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and admire nature from afar.

Local Food.  Once you visit Bremer Bay, you will understand why eating fresh is the best meal. The town is surrounded by pristine waters and unpolluted air as it hugs along the coastline of Western Australia’s southern coast. Pubs, restaurants, cafés are available in the area, so you won’t be short of good eats and quality coffees! Prawns and crayfish are usually seasonal. Best to ask around for availability!
